ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA

Davidson County, North Carolina formed from nearby Rowan County in 1822, stakes claim to nearly 570 square miles of the booming Piedmont region in the heart of North Carolina. Today, Davidson County shares its borders with Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph and Rowan counties. William Lee Davidson, a general who lost his life in America’s Revolutionary War in 1781, was the inspiration behind the name of ‘Davidson County’.

Davidson County, NC occupies a centralized location, with easy access to U.S. 52 and Interstate 85. A unique rail system offers routes from two directions, High Point and Winston-Salem. Davidson County is less than a half-hour away from the Piedmont Triad cities of Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem. The national banking center of Charlotte, NC lies within an hour’s drive, with the history-rich Capital City of Raleigh only two-hour’s away. Portions of Davidson County, North Carolina lie within the prestigious Yadkin Valley Wine Region.

Seventeen townships and several incorporated towns comprise Davidson County, population 147,246 (Census 2000 Data). The incorporated towns include Denton, Lexington and Thomasville. Denton, NC, home to nearly 1,500 residents, lies in the southern part of the county. Each July, the Southeast Old Threshers’ Reunion brings 75,000 people to Denton Farm Park to celebrate the origins of farming.

Situated in the nucleus of North Carolina’s renowned furniture manufacturing region, Lexington and Thomasville are well known for their production of fine home furnishings. Lexington, NC, population 19,953, is the seat of Davidson County and its largest town. Many of the neighborhoods in Lexington function as major bedroom communities for surrounding cities such as Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Thomasville, with its population of 19,788, is a close second in size. Lexington Home Brands and Thomasville Furniture Industries are the top two employers in Davidson County, North Carolina, while Lexington Memorial Hospital and Thomasville Medical Center are among its finest health care facilities. Davidson County Community College is on I-85 between Lexington and Thomasville.

Lexington, North Carolina is home to the Childress Vineyards, the Richard Childress Racing Shop and Museum and the artistic creations of Bob Timberlake. Davidson County, NC is also renowned for some of the finest barbeque restaurants in the South. Community festivals include the Davidson County Agricultural Fair in September and the BBQ Festival held each October.

Davidson County boasts a healthy economy, whose chief industries are the furniture, tobacco and textiles sectors. With the headquarters of the Lexington State Bank and the Bank of North Carolina located within the county, Davidson acts as a financial center for the immediate region. In addition, there are now more than a dozen international businesses that operate in Davidson County.
