Guilford
County, North
Carolina was formed in 1771 from portions of
Orange County and Rowan
County. Named for Francis
North, the 1 st Earl of Guilford, Guilford County lies in
the heart of the vibrant Piedmont
Triad Region of North Carolina. A strategic location and
excellent base of business and education poise Guilford County
as an enviable place to live and work.
Guilford County reported a population of 421,048 in the 2000
Census. Eighteen townships and several incorporated cities
and towns encompass the nearly 660 square miles that make up
Guilford County. The largest cities are Greensboro
and High
Point, and the majority of Guilford County lies within the
Greensboro-High Point metro area. Greensboro and High Point,
along with Winston-Salem,
found in Forsyth
County, make up the Piedmont Triad. Other cities, all with
populations that fall well below 8,000, include Jamestown,
Oak Ridge,
Pleasant
Garden, Sedalia,
Stokesdale,
Summerfield
and Whitsett.
Census Designated Places (CDP’s) in Guilford County include Forest
Oaks and McLeansville.
Guilford is NC’s
third largest county.
Characterized by gently rolling hills, multitudes of trees
and scenic mountain views, Greensboro
serves as the seat of Guilford County, North Carolina. With a
population of 223,891, Greensboro is the third most populous
city in NC and is the largest city in the Piedmont Triad.
Located at the convergence of I-40
and I-85,
and situated midway between Charlotte
and the capital city of Raleigh,

High
Point, population 85,839, is a city renowned for bus
manufacturing and textiles. Also known for its furniture,

80,000 buyers and exhibitors from all over the world, giving
High Point an international flair. High Point and the entire
Guilford County region have access to an intricate
transportation infrastructure and a centralized location
within the Piedmont region that makes for an excellent site
for successful business. High Point is North Carolina’s only
city whose borders spread throughout four counties. In
addition to Guilford County, NC these include: Davidson,
Forsyth
and Randolph
counties. Parts of High Point rise above 1000 feet, making it
one of the Piedmont’s highest elevated cities.
Guilford County, North Carolina is home to six higher
learning facilities, the majority of which are in Greensboro.
These include Bennett
College, Greensboro
College, Guilford
College, North
Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and
the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro. The
Guilford Technical Community College system operates
several campuses throughout the county. Guilford County, NC
also has an excellent public
school system and several private
schools from which to choose.
